One of the things we have appreciated on the Southside of Hong Kong Island is how dog-friendly it is. In Stanley, dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating areas of cafés. There are even several Guinness Book of World Records made in Stanley having to do with dogs. For example, the most dogs doing dog yoga (270) or the most dogs balancing dog treats on their noses (109). (Read more here.) You can imagine, we see dogs all the time.
In our neighborhood there are even "dog latrines" where people walk their dogs. I honestly have never seen a dog use them in the way intended, but they exist. (Rigby once pooped right NEXT TO one, though!)
The very cool thing is that at the Tai Tam Country Park near us, you can walk your dog off leash. It is amazing how many people will bring their dogs walking or running with them with no incidents of dog fights. We came to trust that Rigby would meet the dogs he wanted to and keep clear of the ones he didn't feel safe with.
Of course, there are the quirky things too - people who put their lapdogs in strollers and "walk them" for example. While I think it is silly, it is still entertaining.
So, we have enjoyed the dog culture here very much.
